The approval of fire safety plans for care occupancies has the potential to place local fire safety officials and their communities in a liable position should a fire occur. There are very few tools to assess these plans and often they fail catastrophically during fire incidents. Using experiences from recent Ontario fatal and near fatal fires the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs has developed a Guideline for the approval of these plans. Much of the information comes from experiences garnered from these recent fires as well as NFPA 101. This presentation will discuss the concerns regarding the approval of fire safety plans, the conduct of fire drills and the use of NFPA 101® Life Safety Code® and NFPA 101A Guide on Alternative Approaches to Life Safety. It will to help make better decisions on whether to approve these plans, or to make alternative requirements such as retroactive sprinklering of existing occupancies.
